IntroductionThe websiteThis website provides information from the EU funded research project led by the University of Edinburgh from 2004 - 2008. The projectSustainable land-use activities are being implemented in the N'hambita community to generate verifiable carbon emission reductions. N'hambita is within the buffer zone of the Gorongosa National Park in the Sofala province, Mozambique. The land use activities were set up by Envirotrade in 2001, with technical assistance from ECCM, and were launched in 2003. The University of Edinburgh School of GeoSciences conducts research within the project area. The European Union has provided core funding for the project, 2003-8. These land management activities are carried out under the Plan Vivo system, a methodology which creates measurable and verifiable emissions reductions through land management options. The land use systems and the accompanying carbon payments provide income for the poor in the area, and other benefits such as fruit, timber, fodder, and fuel wood, and increased soil stability. In addition, the community benefit from improved organisational capacity, education and awareness about forest stewardship and conservation, and the introduction of novel income streams including bee-keeping, and craft making. The futureThe N'hambita Community Carbon Project is serving as a demonstration model which will be replicated in other areas both within and outside of Mozambique. See the Envirotrade website for more information.
