Project Objectives
The principal objectives of the project are as follows:
- Develop sustainable land use practices, in participation
with the N'hambita community, which have the potential to provide
socio-economic benefits and protect and restore forest resources.
- Restoration of degraded areas
- Sustainable timber utilisation
- Agroforestry
- Production of non-timber forest products (NTFPs)
- Produce research outputs into the potential of
sustainable land use in the miombo ecosystem to sequester and conserve carbon
in order to create regionally applicable models which may be used to quantify
carbon benefits in the pilot project area and in other future projects in the
region.
- Biomass surveys
- Regional deforestation baselines
- Carbon modelling
- Production of evidence-based technical specifications
- Build capacity in provincial organisations, so that
they can use the results of the research to advise on land use activities and
assess potential carbon benefits from projects in the province. This will
involve the development of an independent trust fund to administer carbon
sales. The following specific capabilities are required.
- Carbon verification
- Trust fund administration
- Land management planning support
