Forest Protection and RegenerationCarbon offsets are created from reforestation of deforested areas and also from regeneration and protection of currently forested areas. Often this includes increasing the cover on degraded forests where illigal logging for example has occured. Protecting existing forests is one of the most effective ways of maintaining or even enhancing biodiversity, as the forest is well established. The forest also can still be used by local communities who can access the wide variety of forest plants, which provide products including medicines, fruits and gum, and also insects and fungi. The carbon savings are maximised in the mature forest which is also protected for future generations.
Mature miombo woodland When used in combination with agroforestry and other tree planting activities, forests have been successfully protected. This is because the demand for firewood inside the forest area has been reduced, as it is available from the agroforestry plots. Trees have to be pruned anyway which provides firewood, and these areas are often near houses for example in homestead planting which typically is undertaken in the land directly around a house. |
