Plan Vivo

Plan Vivo is a land management system which creates quantifiable Verified Emissions Reductions (VER's) of carbon.

The aim of Plan Vivo is to engage small land holders in sustainable land use, and allow them access to carbon finance. These small land holders would otherwise be excluded from the emerging carbon market which is increasingly moving towards industry clean-up and projects such as methane capture and large plantations. Through the Plan Vivo system buyers can, unlike buyers of industrial projects, not only help to mitigate climate change but can help communities in developing countries invest in their own future, while protecting biodiversity, soil and water quality.

Woman

Women are particularly encouraged to participate in the project

The Plan Vivo system was piloted in the Scolel Te project, which has now been running successfully in Mexico for over 10 years. The project was one of the first of its type, is an exemplar for good practice techniques. It is currently operating without the need for external funding and is a model for the development of other Plan Vivo projects.

Plan Vivo Carbon Offsets

Carbon offsets sold through the N'hambita Community Carbon Project, and all Plan Vivo credits are sold on the voluntary market, and not within the 'cap and trade' CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) systems under the Kyoto Protocol.

Buyers in the past two years of carbon offsets from Mozambique include The CarbonNeutral Company, IIED (International Institute for Environment and Development) and the Creative Artists Agency of Los Angeles.

For more information about the purchase of Carbon Offsets or the Plan Vivo system please visit the Plan Vivo website.
