Research

Research is led by the University of Edinburgh and supported by EU funding. This research compliments the project aims to provide the scientific background for its activities.

The current research areas are:

MODIS NDVI 250m

Carbon

  • Quantification of baselines (remote sensing of land cover)
  • Cycling of carbon through soils (PSP's)
  • Growth rates of key tree species
  • Spatial variability of carbon dynamics.
Forest fire

Fire

  • Surveys of fire incidence
  • Importance of fire in carbon dynamics
  • Fire management activities (fire breaks, etc.)
Charcoal transport

Charcoal production

  • Distribution of current charcoal making activities
  • Efficiency in charcoal production techniques
  • Sustainable charcoal production methodologies
Canopy photos

Miombo Woodlands

  • Sensitivity of miombo woodlands to climate change
  • Biodiversity mapping
  • Allometric relationships
  • Ecosystem dynamics

remote sensing

Remote Sensing

  • Leaf area index (LAI)
  • Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI)
  • Land cover types classification
  • A variety of sensors: MODIS & SPOT
